Thermoacoustic devices are very different from Stirling devices, although the individual path traveled by each working gas molecule does follow a real Stirling cycle. These devices include the thermoacoustic engine and thermoacoustic refrigerator(cold side). High-amplitude acoustic standing waves cause compression andexpansion analogous to a Stirling power piston, while out-of-phase acoustic traveling waves cause displacement along a temperature gradient, analogous to a Stirling displacer piston. Thus a Thermoacoustic device typically does not have a displacer, as found in a beta or gamma Stirling.
How it works?
This is traditionally known as an external combustion engine in contrast to an internal combustion engine where the heat input is by combustion of a fuel within the body of the working fluid. Unlike the steam engine's use of water in both its liquid and gaseous phases as the working fluid,the Stirling engine encloses a fixed quantity of permanently gaseous fluid such as air or helium. As in all heat engines, the general cycle consists of compressing cool gas, heating the gas, expanding the hot gas, and finally cooling the gas before repeating the cycle.

This is the fastest and smoothest running Stirling engine that I have tested!
[[VIDEOID:1b1cc8c491cf5deaa3207a5fe2e6eb07]]This small Stirling engine is just an amazing toy, teaching tool or a conversation piece for your desk. It is fully working hot air engine. This unit does not have a small generator on it or an LED light. As a result it runs much faster without the additional load and your will see that in my product video. This little engine just moves fast!
This is professionally made using aluminum, steel, brass, wood and glass. Its craftsmanship and quality is really good. It would look good on your desk at work or at home or on a table or a book shelf. It would make a great gift for the mechanical geek in your family or for a friend.
I purchased some high quality 95% denatured alcohol to run the engine. It is a highly efficient fuel that burns cleanly and produces a high heat to operate the dual cylinder engine.
In my video I show what comes in the box and how to quickly and easily start the engine. It only takes a minute or so. The unit came nicely packed and it was wrapped in such a way that there was no damage to the glass parts. I loved how the heat cylinder is made of glass for easy heating but so you can also view the piston moving back and forth. It adds to the entertainment factor and it provides an insight into the engine's operation that you couldn't see if it was a metal cylinder.
The unit will spin the flywheel between 1300 and 1500 RPMs. This unit certainly runs in the area of 1500 and it is really fast. The flywheel is pushed by the hot air piston and its action moves the cool air injection piston using metal rods and a rocking arm. The engine was invented in 1815 by Robert Stirling who was a London pastor and so it was named after him. This is a dual cylinder engine with a hot expansion cylinder and a cool compression cylinder.
This external combustion engine is just an amazing toy or a desk conversation model. The base is made of finished wood with four rubber feet on it to set on your desk. It is nicely machined and well put together and it is a perfectly functioning engine. This is an alpha design of the engine using the dual cylinders. It is a great example of how simple air can be used to create an engine type of motion. It is more efficient and less dangerous than a steam engine.
The hot cylinder allows the expanding air to push back the piston and the cold cylinder pulls in and compresses the cooler air and injects it into the hot chamber to start the next cycle.
You can blow out the flame to stop the engine and after the flame goes out the engine begins to slow down and finally stops. Make sure that if you are demonstrating it to children that they do not touch the hot glass or metal parts or even the flame. The alcohol burns so cleanly that it is hard to see that there is a flame and they can get burned. Even though the unit weighs 11.71 ounces the unit, when running, can vibrate and walk on a table top so make sure that it is held down and not moving off of the table. Remember it does have a flame and a flammable liquid in the bottle. This improved design has a recess in the wooden base for the alcohol bottle and a metal spring that holds the bottle in place. Also keep an eye on the small bottle of alcohol and make sure that it does not fall off of the table and spill the flammable liquid on your floor and catch it on fire.
Watching this thing run is so interesting and children are fascinated with it and so was I! I rated this as a 5 star item and I was impressed with the functionality and the quality of the product.

Worked very well for about the first 4-5 runs. ...
Worked very well for about the first 4-5 runs......then the displacer piston fell off of the shaft(set screw cam loose).
The outer glas tube cracked when taken off the tighten set screw.......then o-ring tore upon replacement,which was extremely difficult.
It runs at a medium speed now,never got back its "madly" (lol)speed.But, it does run.............just hope I never have to replace glass again....if so......it will just go in the trash(too agrivating to go thru again).

Fascinating to watch the little engine at work

[[VIDEOID:bed7bd28a2b0edc2316e7fd6033436d0]]One of my least favorite courses in engineering school was thermodynamics, but that's where I first learned about the Stirling cycle and the remarkable engines that are based on it. Stirling engines are categorized as external combustion closed cycle engines, where the working fluid (in this case, air) is permanently contained within the engine. The Sunnytech Stirling engine is an example of an Alpha-type Stirling engine. There are two cylinders. The expansion cylinder is maintained at a high temperature while the compression cylinder is cooled.
The engine worked perfectly for me using 95% denatured alcohol. If you have rubbing alcohol in the house, it's probably only 70% alcohol. That may work, but it doesn't burn hot enough to work very well, and the engine may stall. I bought a quart of 95% denatured alcohol at Home Depot for about $7. Local hardware stores also carry it for cleaning paint brushes and fueling alcohol lamps. You can also buy it from Amazon: Klean-Strip Green QKGA75003 Denatured Alcohol, 1-Quart.
Once started, the engine's pistons were moving so fast that I couldn't even follow them. It's a very impressive demonstration of a Stirling cycle engine. Using glass tubes for the cylinders was a great idea, since it lets you see the pistons. When I first lit the alcohol lamp, I waited about a minute or so before the air in the cylinder was hot enough to start the engine. Just spin the flywheel to get it started. If it doesn't start the first time you spin the flywheel, wait a few seconds and try it again. At some point it will start and become self-sustaining until the fuel runs out. Even after the fuel runs out, there's enough heat energy remaining in the engine to keep it running for a while longer.
It was fascinating to watch the little engine running. It's a relatively simple device that may have much greater practical use in the future, since as an external combustion engine, it can use a variety of fuels. The Sunnytech hot air Stirling engine is a great way to demonstrate how a Stirling engine works - it's much more impressive than the drawings or computer graphics that are typically used to demonstrate the workings of the engine. If you're interested in learning more about the Stirling cycle and Stirling engines, just google the words, and you'll get a ton of page hits.
If you have a budding young engineer or scientist in the family, they'll love watching the Stirling engine at work. I can also imagine a high school science teacher using the Stirling model in a demonstration. Even if you don't have much interest in science, the engine is still a lot of fun to watch.
